Emergency services have helped save a 21-year-old man during a welfare incident in Durham city centre this evening.

The alarm was raised shortly after 7pm in the Elvet Bridge area of the city when the man was seen sitting on the wall of the medieval bridge.

Inspector Dave Clarke of Durham City Police said: "We were called out to a young man who was experiencing a mental health crisis.

"Trained negotiators have spoken to him at the scene and he is now being looked after by professionals.

"We had to close the road and I would like to thank everyone for their patience this evening."

Several police cars, fire engines and ambulances were called to the scene.

A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "We were called to the Elvet Bridge in Durham shortly after 7pm this evening out of concerns for a person's welfare.

"We dispatched two crews from our Hazardous Area Response Team, who were later stood down by the police. No-one was injured."

Anyone who is finding it hard to cope can call the Samaritans anytime on 116 123.
