THERE was a big turnout at a funeral today to say goodbye to a Darlington teenager.

Abiagael Muttrie died on Sunday, May 22 following a stay in hospital.

Darlington Crematorium was packed today (Wednesday, June 8) as friends and family turned out to say a last farewell for the popular 17-year-old.

Known for her determination to not give up, Abiagael suffered from Spina Bifida, which affected her mobility.

This did not stop her sunny, positive demeanour however, as her father, Mark Muttrie described her as “Just such a sweet, happy girl.”

The teenager, who loved Ed Sheeran, butterflies and bright colours, died after suffering a pulmonary embolism following a 13-day stay in hospital.

Parents Nickie and Mark Muttrie recalled fond memories of trips to Whitby and Redcar and Abiagael’s joy at seeing the colourful houses at Balamory in Scotland.

Abiagael was a daughter, sister, cousin and friend and touched the hearts of those at Beaumont Hill Academy and Darlington College.

Funeral-goers turned out in flamboyant colours and butterfly-shaped floral tributes were left for the youngster, including one which read “Princess Abiagael”.

Some of Abiagael’s favourite songs played, including ‘Perfect’ by Ed Sheeran, ‘Don’t Stop Believin’ by Journey and ‘See You Again’ by Wiz Khalifa.

The unusual spelling of Abiagael’s name was referred to as being a reflection of her special and unique personality.

In attendance were family, friends, staff from Darlington College and Beaumont Hill Academy.

Both educational institutions put out touching tributes before Abiagael’s funeral where Beaumont Hill Academy referred to her “grit and determination in maintaining her independence” and Darlington College described her as being “happy, courageous and much-loved.”

The service was followed by a wake at The Springfield in Darlington, where family and friends were invited to share stories and memories of Abiagael.

A crowdfunding page which was set up to help cover the funeral costs has now reached £1870. For those wishing to donate, visit: https://www.gofundme.com/f/in-loving-memory-of-abiagael-muttrie?qid=dab68e16cd159326044af824405316d6
