ONE person was airflifted to hospital with injuries following a serious crash between a lorry and a car on the A1 near Morpeth today (May 30).

Emergency services were alerted to the collision on the A1, between the A697 and Fenrother, at about 2.30pm – the crash led to the road being closed in both directions.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “At 2.30pm today (Monday) we received a report of a collision involving a car and a lorry on the A1 near the A697 Longhorsley turn off.

“Emergency services are currently at the scene. The road has been closed and is likely to remain so for a number of hours. A diversion is currently in place.”

A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "We were called to reports of a road traffic collision on the A1 northbound shortly before 2.30pm this afternoon.

We dispatched one ambulance crew and a clinical team leader and requested support from Great North Air Ambulance Service. One patient has been flown to the RVI for further treatment."

The road remains closed.
