A NORTH Yorkshire voluntary school is set to close after an Ofsted report found the premises to be “inadequate”.

Weaverthorpe Church of England Voluntary Controlled Primary School, in Malton, which only has 21 students, has been recommended for closure at the end of the academic year.

North Yorkshire County Council said attempts to find a Multi-Academy Trust to sponsor the school were not successful due to viability concerns.

The school was found to be “inadequate” following an inspection report by Ofsted in 2020 and was issued with a Directive Academy Order as required by legislation.

North Yorkshire County Council say they also worked with Diocese of York to try and find an alternative partnership with other schools in the maintained sector, which was also unsuccessful.

The council continued to stress that it had supported the school through an Interim Executive Board and temporary leadership over the past two years but those arrangements are unable to continue beyond July 22.

All potential avenues that might have secured the future of Weaverthorpe school have also been exhausted.

Executive members agreed to publish the required proposals and statutory notices, with a final decision expected in late May.

A spokesperson for North Yorkshire County Council said: “If the proposed closures is confirmed, Weaverthorpe school will close at the end of August.
