HOLIDAYMAKERS in the North East will have one more destination to choose from as the budget airline Easyjet is making a return.

As the summer holiday season begins the airline will return to operate international flights between Newcastle and Palma in Majorca.

It already operates domestic flights from the region to Bristol and Belfast in Northern Ireland.

But the new Palma flights will operate up to four times a week, with departures taking place on a Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.

According to the airline, the first flights will depart on May 2 and operate throughout the summer season until October 29.

As the return was first announced, Newcastle Airport bosses welcomed the move as a huge boost of confidence for the airport and North East.

Leon McQuaid, Director of Aviation Development said: “We are delighted to see the return of international flights with easyJet at Newcastle International Airport - a fantastic step forward and a vote of confidence from the airline in the Airport and the region as we move into 2022.

"The new service to Palma will provide even more choice for our passengers to one of the region’s favourite sunshine destinations."

Easyjet is making a return after the controversial closure of its base in Newcastle in 2020 and all permanent international flights scrapped.

Passengers and holidaymakers had hit out as they said they had lost a major series of flights, with only Belfast and Bristol remaining in operation.

At the time, the airline did not rule out any future return of international flights to the region, saying there were no plans to increase any of its existing routes.

But as the Palma flights were announced earlier this year, Ali Gayward, easyJet’s UK Country Manager said: “We’re delighted to be able to operate from Newcastle to Palma once again for next summer, with convenient and affordable connections to one of our customers’ favourite beach destinations in the Balearics.

"We remain committed to strengthening our unrivalled short-haul network and providing more affordable and easy connections to our customers across the North East by offering low fares and more choice when they travel.”
