Officers from Durham Constabulary are still looking into the factors of the three-car crash on the Northbound slip road onto the A1(M) at Carville Interchange on Monday (January 10).

The incident occurred shortly after 7.20am between Carville Interchange and Chester-le-Street, which saw emergency services at the scene for the majority of the day.

This led to the entire A1(M) Northbound being shut to motorists and leaving five mile tailbacks for queuing drivers.

Two people were taken to University Hospital of North Durham with minor injuries while the third driver was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary Hospital in Newcastle with serious injuries where they remain, according to Durham Constabulary.

The incident involved a blue VW Touran, white Fiat 500, and a black Renault Captur.

Anyone with information is asked to contact PC Paul Oliver from the Road Policing Unit on 101, quoting incident number 43 of January 10.
