A MAN who “caused misery to his community” has been recalled to prison after failing to comply with the conditions of his Criminal Behaviour Order issued last year.

Kearan Briggs, of Dene Avenue, Shotton Colliery, plead guilty in October to a public order offence, theft, driving whilst disqualified, and driving without insurance.

As well as a custodial sentence suspended for 18 months, the 20-year-old was given the Criminal Behaviour Order which restricts how he can behave in public spaces and forced him to comply with certain criteria.

However, Durham Constabulary have now confirmed that Briggs has failed to comply with all the stipulations of the order, including failing to attend meetings with the probation service.

As part of the ‘zero tolerance’ approach officers for the police force promised to take, Briggs suspended sentence has been activated, and he will now be put behind bars for the next month.

Inspector Gary Smith, of Peterlee Neighbourhood Police Team, has highlighted how much of a strain Briggs has put on his local community, and has committed to monitoring him in the future.

He said: “Briggs has caused misery for the Shotton community, and when we successfully applied for the CBO we warned that we would not hesitate to use the powers available.

“He has been recalled to prison for four weeks and will remain on license for a further 4 weeks when he is released.

“We will continue to monitor his behaviour and will not ease up where breaches occur, or offences are committed.

“As we said previously, we will not allow the actions of one person to have such a persistent negative effect on our community.”

Briggs will be subject to Post Sentence Supervision for 12 months after his release from prison, which will be closely monitored.
