A COUNTY Durham landmark was seen by the nation as it featured in a dramatic episode of Emmerdale last night - prompting lots of reaction.

Viewers in the region picked up on the familiar backdrop of the 7pm episode on ITV as they saw an impressive stunt at High Force, near Middleton-in-Teesdale.

It comes after the cast and crew of the prime time show were last month spotted filming scenes for the episode at the Tees Barrage in Stockton, and at High Force.

Following on from Monday's episode, which starts off with characters heading to an outdoor challenge event, last night's scenes were all based at High Force.

Emmerdale director, Duncan Foster, last week said the scenes are part of a dramatic set of episodes for the show's "survival week," based on the outdoor challenge going awry.

Asked what the audience can expect from the so-called “survival week”, Mr Foster said: “To be scared, to be shocked, to hopefully be misled at various moments.

“It may leave you with a sense of frustration but it’s going to be brilliant.”

On social media, scenes were met with excitement as viewers spotted the location - picking up on the fact it was some distance from where the village actually is.

Another viewer, Shannon Louise was shocked to see the landmark being used as a filming location.

She said: "Lovely to see Teesdale on Emmerdale tonight! High force is such a gorgeous waterfall."

Dubbed the "most spectacular" waterfalls in Britain, High Force sees the River Tees cascade 21 metres into a "plunge pool" below.

In recent years, it has gone on to attract thousands of visitors from far and wide as TripAdvisor reviews suggest it is "one of a kind."
