TRIBUTES have been paid to a man who died after an assault in Thornaby on Friday.

Police have now identified the victim as 40-year-old James Stokoe, from Stockton.

Mr Stokoe died yesterday after being assaulted in Trenchard Avenue, Thornaby. 

His family have shared a tribute to him, saying: “James was a much loved husband, father, son and son-in-law. He was a treasured friend to so many people.

“James was a wonderfully kind and gentle person. There are no words to express our sadness.”

Mr Stokoe's  family have requested privacy at this very difficult time so that they can grieve.

Police have launched a murder inquiry and have been continuing their activities in Thornaby today following yesterday's incident. 

No arrests have been made in connection to the incident. 

Police were called to a report of a man seriously injured inside a silver BMW vehicle on Trenchard Avenue at about 2.20pm. 

Police and paramedics attended but Mr Stokoe was pronounced dead at the scene. 

Specialist Officers are supporting his family.

Cleveland Police is appealing for any person with information, including dashcam or CCTV footage, which may assist the investigation in to the death of the victim, to make contact urgently on 101 -  quoting reference 077823.
