A SCHEME aimed at reducing congestion on the A66 in Darlington gets underway this month.

Highways England is introducing a third lane on the B6280 approach to Morton Palms roundabout to relieve congestion and improve journeys times. The scheme is part of the £220m Congestion Relief Fund announced in March 2017.

Steven Cox, project manager at Highways England, said: “Adding a third lane on the approach to the roundabout will increase the capacity of the junction and will also mean there is a dedicated lane for drivers travelling in each direction, which will help to reduce congestion.”

The work starts on Monday, February 18 and there will be overnight full carriageway closures from 8pm to 6am until Monday, February 25 on the eastbound B6280 between Morrisons roundabout and the A66 Morton Palms roundabout.

Traffic will be diverted via McMullen Road and B6279. Two narrow lanes will remain open eastbound during the day.

A scheme to improve road markings and signage at the A66 Blands Corner roundabout in Darlington starts on Monday, February 25, lasting until April 22.

Any road closures will be signposted ahead of time.
