POLICE have confirmed they are no longer investigating an allegation of rape that was said to have taken place in Darlington in the early hours of Saturday morning.
And on Sunday they have arrested a 30-year-old woman on suspicion of wasting police time.
She admitted the offence in interview and will be dealt with through an out of court disposal.
A 25-year-old man who had been arrested on suspicion of rape has been released without charge.
Detective Sergeant John Tyers, from Darlington CID, said: “We take all allegations such as this extremely seriously and, as a result, we invest a huge amount of police resources into investigating and providing support for genuine victims.
“We would urge anyone who believes they have been a victim of sexual assault or rape to contact us on 101, or dial 999 in an emergency.
“Alternatively, support is available through The Meadows Sexual Assault Referral Centre on 0191 372 9202 during office hours from Monday to Friday, or 03333 448283 outside of office hours.”
