CONCERNED residents have been reassured following a serious sexual assault near to a town's cemetery.

Bishop Auckland Police are still investigating after a woman was assaulted near Bishop Auckland Town Cemetery, on October 20.

Andy Reeves, Neighbourhood Inspector for Bishop Auckland said he wanted to reassure residents over the increased police presence.

He said: “We are aware of a number of concerns from residents following police activity in the area near the Town Cemetery.

“I would like to reassure the public that our increased presence is to ensure a search is thoroughly conducted.

“The nature of this incident is very rare but I would like to advise people to be vigilant for their own safety and report any suspicious behaviour.

“I’d like to thank the public for their patience in the meantime while access to the area is limited.

“The investigation is ongoing and several lines of enquiry are being pursued.

“We would also encourage anyone with information, no matter how trivial, to come forward."
