POLICE investigating the report of a serious sexual assault are appealing for witnesses.

The victim, a woman, was walking alone when she was attacked in the path between Bishop Auckland cemetery, off South Church Road and Brack’s Farm, on Saturday at about 8pm.

The offender is described as smaller than 5ft 7ins with a local accent and was wearing a baseball cap, bandana and body-warmer at the time of the incident, but police are keen to hear from people who saw anyone acting suspiciously in the area at that time.

Detective Chief Inspector Caroline Davies, of the South Durham Criminal Investigation Department (CID), said: “There may be members of the public who hold vital information and therefore we are appealing for these people to come forward.

“If you were in the area at the time, I would urge anyone with information, no matter how small, to come forward as it may assist us with our inquiries.

“If anyone has CCTV near to the entrance and exit routes of this location or if anyone had a GoPro or recording equipment in the vicinity, please contact us.

“We have dedicated and specially-trained officers who are currently supporting the victim and a detailed investigation is now underway.”

She added: “While our inquiry is ongoing, we recommend that people have a heightened awareness of their own personal safety.

“There will also be a visible police presence in the locality to provide reassurance.”
