IF there's something the Great British public does well, it's throwing a party over a bank holiday weekend. So what could be better than a four-day weekend, and celebrating the Platinum Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II to boot.

Across our region, towns and villages, and large tourist attractions and small local groups have put in months of planning to organise a vast array of events for the whole family to enjoy – so we have put together a round-up of just some of what is on offer.

In County Durham, Beamish is inviting visitors to celebrate The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in the 1950s, the decade Her Majesty’s reign began.

The museum will be holding 1950s street parties during a week of celebrations in local half term, from Saturday, May 28 to Sunday, June 5, and is opening its new Coronation Park and Recreation Ground, named in honour of The Queen.

Beamish’s 1950s terrace and welfare hall will be decorated for the occasion and visitors can enjoy activities including music, crown-making, football skills, crafts and other Jubilee-themed fun.

“Our new Coronation Park will be open and we’ll be celebrating the Jubilee in true 1950s style, with street parties, music, dancing and activities for all the family, we hope everyone can join us.

“Huge congratulations to Her Majesty on this special anniversary from everyone at Beamish!”

The Platinum Jubilee Celebrations at Beamish include: a street party at the 1950s terrace; crown-making; 1950s music and dancing;1950s football; watch footage of The Queen’s Coronation in the 1950s welfare hall; and party games at 1950s Spain’s Field Farm on May 28 and 29, and June 2 to 5.

Beamish has been working with Durham Amateur Football Trust to develop the football area in The 1950s Town and tell the story of amateur football in County Durham in the decade.

Bowes Museum, County Durham

Jubilee-themed events at the Bowes Museum over the half term holiday and Bank Holiday weekend range from a dog show and community picnic in the grounds to children's crafts, to an afternoon with tv art and antiques presenter David Harper.

Everyone's welcome to attend Corgifest (other dogs welcome) on Saturday, May 28 from 11am to 3pm, where people can take part in our jubilee dog show with dog agility and lots of fun classes.

Enjoy the festivities and watch for free or pay £5 to enter your dog in as many classes as they like. There will also be dog fancy dress and puppiccinos on the terrace.

There will also be a multitude of trade stands for people to browse from Eden Animal Rescue, Joanne Rowland Art, Marleyfield Pet Boutique, Create & Paint, Therapy Dogs Nationwide, Canine First Aid Training and Lone Wolf Yoga.

Visitors to Corgifest can also enjoy dog yoga demonstrations at 1pm and a dog first aid demonstration at 2pm where they'll be able to watch rescue breath technique, CPR and bandaging skill.

Find out more about the dogs depicted throughout the museum's collection in free with admission dog spotting tour led by our knowledgeable and friendly volunteer guides.

Families can join in activities and party games with Chase and Marshal from Pup Patrol in the outdoor classroom and have their photos taken with them too as part of Corgifest from 2pm until 3pm on Saturday, May 28. Tickets are £10 a child, under 1s and one parent/guardian free, spaces are limited.

Also on offer is the British East India Company Re-enactment group on Saturday, May 28 from 10am in the grounds of the museum; create colourful bunting to help decorate the museum; discover what makes a perfect souvenir with Royal superfan Anita Atkinson, who has lent lots of her own memorabilia to our Platinum Jubilee Celebration exhibition.

Visitors can also create their own portrait of the Queen; and enjoy a community picnic in the grounds on Sunday, June 5 from 11am to 4pm. There will be prizes for the best dressed picnic table, blanket and jubilee themed costume or fancy dress for children and adults. There will also be children's arts and crafts on offer as part of the Jubilee Jubilations event on the same day from 10.30am until 3.30pm where children can make a sparkly crown fit for a Queen or a proud Royal Guard standing tall to protect their picnic.

Frosterley Jubilee Party, County Durham

Among the smaller community events is the Frosterley Jubilee Party, in the village near Bishop Auckland.

Taking place on fields behind the Frosterley Inn on Saturday, June 5 from 12.30pm. Activities include a sports day from 1.30pm, bouncy castle, karaoke, photo booth, children's rock painting and paper plate decorating competitions, and a toast to the Queen at 3pm.

Darlington

In Darlington, from Thursday, June 2, the town centre will celebrate with three days of free live entertainment in the Market Square, with large screen broadcasting of the main event, food and drink stalls, children’s crafts and vintage-themed activities.

Darlington Hippodrome has also organised a special tour taking place every day between Monday, May 30 and Wednesday, June 1.

The Archive and Queen Tea tour will include all public areas of the theatre, as well as the auditorium and backstage. This tour will also celebrate the history of the Hippodrome over the last 100 years and allow the public to explore the theatre's archive including programmes, photographs and more.

The tour will conclude with a cream tea, consisting of a hot drink of the participant’s choice and a scone with jam and clotted cream.

Stockton

Across Stockton-on-Tees, a series of events is taking place around the borough.

Councillor Jim Beall, Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council’s cabinet member for health, leisure and culture, said: “It’s really exciting to be able to reveal our plans to celebrate The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee and there promises to be something for all the family with free events happening across the Bank Holiday weekend.

“As well as a full programme of events organised by the council, it’s great to see people organising street parties in their neighbourhoods with over 140 planned – and Jubilee packs provided by the council to support their efforts.”

Here’s what you can expect: beacon-lighting event on Thursday, June 2.

Join the Mayor of Stockton-on-Tees on Stockton High Street for a beacon-lighting ceremony to begin the bank holiday celebrations at 9pm.

A Platinum Jubilee party and music event will take place on Saturday, June 4 at Stockton Riverside from 5pm for free, live music. As well as the music, families can enjoy a helter skelter ride, throwing stalls, coconut shy and hook-a-duck, and there will be various food and drink stalls.

A range of historic photographs will be available to view in a special Jubilee double-decker bus, and at 10.30pm there will be display of red, white and blue fireworks.

On Sunday, June 5, residents are invited to come together for the ‘Big Jubilee Lunch’ and have a picnic at Tees Barrage. The event begins at 11am and will include performances from Northern Brass Monkey Band, Lisette Auton, Marina and Cherie Gears, Urban Voice Choir and the Reg Vardy Brass Band.

There will also be poems read out from our poetry competition, with winning entries from children aged under 12, 12 to 17 and from adults aged 18 and over.

Learn about 1950s outfits at The Coronation Catwalk, at Stockton Central Library on Wednesday, May 25 from 6.30pm until 8pm. Booking is essential for the event, which costs £8 and will be hosted by costume historian and dressmaker, Meridith Towne. To book a place, call 01642-528130.

Thornaby Central Library is hosting a drop-in Jubilee crafts, badge-making and a photo booth between 9.30am and 3pm on Saturday, June 4; storyteller Tony Wilson will be providing entertainment throughout the day and there will also be a Queen’s Gambit Chess Challenge.

Preston Park Museum’s Victorian Street will be given a 1950s makeover from Monday, May 30. Visitors are invited to bring a picnic and pull up a chair at the Jubilee table on the street.

There will be lots of other activities on offer, including flag-making, decorate your own crown and food demonstrations.

Redcar

In Redcar and Cleveland, some of the events on offer include: a Jubilee picnic, family craft activities and garden games at Kirkleatham Museum and Grounds between 10am and 4pm from June 2 to 5.

Town Crier official declaration at the Redcar Beacon to announce the lighting for the Jubilee will be at 2pm on Thursday, June 2, with the lighting of the Skinningrove beacon at 9.45pm.

Come along to the Skinningrove jetty between 8am and 5pm on Saturday, June 4 where villages across East Cleveland come together to provide exhibitions and activities. The event will also include a ‘dance spectacular’ on the jetty.

Loftus Platinum Jubilee Parade will be a celebratory parade of cadets and other young people and uniformed organisations followed by a church service of thanksgiving, from 10.30am to 11.30am on June 4.

Residents are invited to a the Platinum Picnic in the Park at Zetland park, Redcar, between noon and 6pm on Sunday, June 5.

A free day of live music, storytelling, performance, creative activities, foodie pop ups and community celebration is available to mark the Queen’s jubilee. The day is fit for a Queen – just drop in and bring your picnics and the entertainment and party atmosphere will be provided.

Guisborough

Chaloner Street Special Jubilee Market in Guisborough has been organised by Friends of Chaloner Street Market and will take place between 10am and 3pm on Sunday, June 5.

Many local communities have also come together to arrange community events ranging from street parties to scarecrow festival across the borough so please keep an eye out in your local area for any activities organised.

The Mayor of Redcar and Cleveland, Cllr Carole Morgan, said: “It’s great to see the excitement building across our communities as they plan to come together in true Redcar and Cleveland style to share this once in a lifetime moment in history.

“There are so many community events, street parties and activities being organised across the borough there really is something for everyone to enjoy as part of the celebrations.

“From parades to picnic in the park or your local street party it is a great opportunity for the people of the borough to get together and celebrate – as always, our communities are doing us proud and really are the jewels in our crown and I would like to wish them all a memorable weekend celebrating this once in a lifetime occasion."

Northallerton

An entertainment extravaganza is being lined up to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in Northallerton.

There’ll be singing and dancing on the town square, classic cars, traction engines and a children’s entertainer in a right royal knees-up on Sunday, June 5.

The free event is being organised by Northallerton Business Improvement District (BID).

Entertainment gets underway at noon and includes popular singing acts, two ‘princesses’, Northallerton Silver Band and Northallerton Musical Theatre Company.

The High Street will be closed to traffic for the duration of the event, allowing spectators more space to enjoy the day.

Richmond

In Richmond, the beacon will be lit on Thursday, June 2 at 9.45pm, at the beacon in Hurgill Road.

Richmond Town Council is holding a free Open Air Cinema at Richmondshire Cricket Club on Thursday 2nd June.

A film for children will be shown at 3.30pm and at 6.30pm a family film will be shown, both films are still to be decided. Bring a chair or blanket and a picnic.

On Friday, June 3 at 10.30am is the Richmond Jubilee Walk, from Nuns Close Car Park. Entry is free, and the walk is just over three miles long, and suitable for all fitness levels and families.

Children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult, and walkers should wear strong footwear and dress for the weather. The walk is on public footpaths and lanes, and estimated time is two to three hours depending on the numbers walking.

Well behaved dogs on leads welcome, and finish is at the Town Hall where refreshments will be served.

There is an option for an easier route back form Round Howe via the Caravan Park. Marshalls will lead and be on the route

Also at Richmondshire Cricket Club, 'ALL OUT', a celebration of live music, food and fun centred around the tipi in the grounds of the cricket club. Two nights of live entertainment on Friday and Saturday, June 3 and 4 from 7pm plus a family festival themed afternoon on Sunday, June 5 between noon and 6pm.

On Saturday, June 4, Richmondshire Cricket Club take on opposition in the North Yorkshire South Durham Cricket League. The bar is open all day serving cold drinks before live music at 7pm.

The family festival on Sunday, June 5 includes live bands all day, the glitter tent, face painting, henna, graffiti art, banner making, t-shirt printing, sports and a Queens Jubilee themed fancy dress competition for all ages. Free entry all day with minimal costs for art activities.

On Saturday, June 4, Richmond Town Council is also hosting a 'kids fun day' in Friary Gardens, from 1pm to 3pm. Activities will include sports day races; crafts; stories with Rhoda Fraser; free shuggy boat rides; and game stalls from Richmond Duck Club.

On Sunday, June 5, from 10am, is the Richmond Meet Procession. The parade starts from Nuns Close Car Park, runs down Newbiggin, and heads to Friary Gardens.

Masham Jubilee celebrations, from June 3 to 4, will include a grand parade of floats, on Friday, June 3, lead by the Town Cryer and Reeth Brass Band, with a local acoustic band playing on the market place and fireworks in the evening.

On Saturday, June 4, there is a photographic displays in the church, a choral concert in the afternoon and in the evening, a Masham’s Got Talent variety show in the town hall.
