MINDLESS vandals targeted a popular beauty spot at the weekend, leaving people furious.

The Woodlands Centre at Saltburn’s Valley Gardens had to be closed on Sunday after yobs smashed up toilets and damaged outbuildings.

In response to an announcement from The Friends of the Valley Saltburn, members of the public offered to fundraise to install CCTV at the site and urged those responsible to come forward.

On Sunday afternoon, a spokesperson for the Friends group said police had closed off the path to the centre while searching for evidence.

They added: “There has been shocking destruction of the toilet and outbuildings at the Woodland Centre.

“If anyone can help out to get it fixed, we would very much appreciate it.”

A post on the group’s Facebook page was shared hundreds of times within hours, attracting an outpouring of support.

Jaclyn Hudson said: “This is so awful to see. We attend and enjoy so many of the events that are put on for the public and to think that people can behave like this is just disgraceful.

“I really hope you catch them and they pay for the damage they have caused.”

Fay Winspear suggested setting up a fundraising page to pay for CCTV at the centre, adding: “I’m honestly lost for words. I know the amount of work put into the Woodland Centre and you all do a fantastic job, which we really appreciate.”
