Two people have been saved by a Coastguard helicopter after getting cut off by the tide and stranded at the base of a cliff.

A HM Coastguard helicopter and Redcar RNLI crew attended the incident after being alerted to reports of two people stuck at the base of Boulby Cliff in Loftus on Saturday (March 16).

The pair were winced to the top of the cliff by helicopter and taken into the care of the Coastguard Rescue Teams.

They confirmed Redcar and Staithes Coastguard Rescue Teams, a lifeboat from Redcar RNLI and the Coastguard helicopter from Humberside were deployed to the scene.

A Coastguard spokesperson said: “HM Coastguard responded to reports of two people stuck at the base of a cliff in the Loftus area yesterday, 16 March.

“Alerted at around 5pm, Redcar and Staithes Coastguard Rescue Teams, a lifeboat from Redcar RNLI and the Coastguard helicopter from Humberside were sent to the scene.

“The casualties were winched to the top of the cliff by helicopter and into the care of the Coastguard Rescue Teams, while the lifeboat provided further safety cover.”

An RNLI spokesperson said: “Both Redcar’s lifeboats were tasked around 5.30pm to two people cut off by the tide.

“The boats stood by whilst the casualties were rescued by helicopter and were then stood down and returned to station.”
