The Ukrainian National Opera return to the North East with two iconic titles after their 2023 UK success.

Despite ongoing struggles in their native Ukraine, the group will return to the North East to perform two iconic titles – Carmen and Madama Butterfly in three North East theatres.

The Northern Echo: The Ukrainian National Opera set to perform Carmen in Princess Alexandra Auditorium, Yarm

The ensemble head to Yarm, Billingham and Newcastle Upon Tyne, travelling from Dnipro, Ukraine, this opera company features an impressive cast  accompanied by a large live orchestra of over thirty musicians.

Producer, Alexej Ignatow of Amande Concerts Ltd. said: “We are really excited to be bringing back this opera company in these difficult times. The journey remains extremely challenging for the artists emotionally and physically. But with lots of dedication and love to our work, we have overcome the many extraordinary obstacles.

This opera and ballet theatre has a long-standing heritage of top-quality opera productions, and we are excited to bring it back to the UK in our 2024 Opera Season.

Carmen

Fans of one of the most famous operatic arias The Toreador Song will rejoice as the acclaimed opera Carmen heads to Yarm in February.

Sung in French with English subtitles, Carmen is a thrilling experience full of fiery passion, jealousy, and violence of 19th century Seville, which is notoriously Bizet’s most popular opera.

The rich and colourful vigour of the gypsies’ scenes will have audiences on the edge of their seats.

With vibrancy, enthusiasm, and intensity, the performances from The Ukrainian National Opera shine through this epic tale and truly bring the story to life. 

The performance will be at Princess Alexandra Auditorium, Yarm on Wednesday, February 21 2024 at 7.30pm

Madama Butterfly

Puccini's tragedy Madama Butterfly is heading to Tyne Theatre and Opera House and Forum Theatre, Billingham in March.

Set in Japan at the turn of the last century, the stunning performances tell the story of a doomed love affair between an American naval officer and his young Japanese bride.

Exploring themes of self-sacrifice, defiance and family the performance is heartbreakingly sung in Italian with English subtitles.

Though immensely tragic, the striking tale of Madama Butterfly was Puccini’s favourite opera and gained many theatrical achievements.

The tragic tale has given the world some of it's most beautiful arias in history such as One Fine Day, Love Duet, and the Humming Chorus. 

The performances will be at Forum Theatre, Billingham on Sunday, March 17 2024 at 7.30pm and Tyne Theatre and Opera House, Newcastle on Monday, March 11 2024 at 7.30pm.
