Residents reacted with shock after a woman’s body was found on a North East street this morning.
Cleveland Police confirmed they were called to the report of a body on the Gilmour Street area of Thornaby at around 6:30am on Monday (January 8).
The woman was declared dead at the scene, while the death is currently being treated as unexplained pending a post-mortem examination.
Police confirmed the woman’s family have been informed.
A Cleveland Police spokesperson said: “Officers were called around 6:30am today, Monday 8th January, to a report of a woman’s body found in the Gilmour Street area of Thornaby.
“The woman was declared dead at the scene.
“Police have now informed the woman’s family and our thoughts remain with them at this extremely difficult time.
“The death is currently being treated as unexplained at this time and a post mortem examination will take place.”
Residents said they had been left shocked by event - with many saying they had been woken by police knocking on their doors and met with the sight of a police cordon and forensics tent.
One resident said: “It’s been cordoned off all morning, it’s only just been taken off.
“I’ve lived here two years nearly and I’ve not seen [something like this] happen.
“It’s only just clearing off now, it’s been here since 6:30, 7am this morning. It seems a bit scary to live here.”
Another resident on the street said: “I don’t know what’s happened but [at] about 6:15am there was someone getting resuscitated for about half an hour, and then covered up, and then the tent.
“[I’ve seen] a few police cars, crime scene forensics, ambulances this morning, but since then nothing.
“There’s usually trouble [on this street], arguments and stuff, but nothing like this.”

Another resident spoke of their shock and said the situation has been difficult for those living on the street.
They said: “It’s been hard because my children have to go to nursery and see all this.
“I got the shock of my life when I woke up because the police woke me up knocking on the doors.”
