A section of road has been closed off after a woman's body was found in the street on Monday (January 8) morning. 

Emergency services were alerted to the incident at around 6.30am on Gilmour Street in Thornaby, following reports of a body found in the street. 

Police, including specialist CSI teams, attended and found the body.

A woman was declared dead at the scene, according to Cleveland Police.

A spokesperson for Cleveland Police added: "Police have now informed the woman’s family and our thoughts remain with them at this extremely difficult time.

"The death is currently being treated as unexplained at this time and a post-mortem examination will take place."

Images from the scene showed a police cordon in place and a blue police tent, while CSI teams could be seen guarding the scene. 

Members of the public could also be seen outside the police cordon, as CSI investigated on Gilmour Street.

The North East Ambulance Service also confirmed its attendance - saying that it sent three vehicles to the scene. 

A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "We were called to an incident this morning (8 January) on Gilmour Street in Thornaby at 6:22am. We dispatched three ambulance crews and one clinical team leader."

Officers were called around 6.30am today, Monday 8th January, to a report of a woman’s body found in the Gilmour Street area of Thornaby.
