The North East is awash with brilliant hotspots and picturesque scenes just a stone's throw from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

From Plessey Woods to Cherryburn, we are so lucky to have a number of destinations to visit without driving too far out.

Redeveloped in recent years and turned into a mini resort, Seaham Marina has the hallmarks of a small harbour you might find abroad.

From a Spanish-like structures which is actually the old lime kiln to cafes offering bites, coffee and lunch in the sun, it's a big hit with those who actually know about it.

And it appears that not everybody knows it exists, with some taking to social media and review sites to say just that.

It also means that it's worthy of being classed as one the region's more "secret" destinations.

And luckily for visitors it is open all year round and features nearby car parking and easy pedestrian access from the town centre via a main road.

Once there, visitors are free to walk around the marina, make use of the nearby beach, or visit a number of businesses that also welcome dogs too.

Businesses include the Bulan Burger Joint, Nicey Icey Ice Cream Parlour, Pancake Kitchen, Seaside Chic and The Lookout Cafe.

Meanwhile, it's not just eateries and shops on offer.

There's also an adventure sports facility operating out of the Seaham Harbour Activity Centre, which provides the likes of kayaking, canoeing and water sports.

According to This Is Durham, Seaham Marina is County Durham's one and only and provides facilities for 96 boats as well as a number of independent businesses.
