The North East is not being spared the extreme heat that is set to sweep across the nation this weekend and early next week – here’s exactly when the hot weather will hit.

Areas of County Durham and Darlington now fall under an amber heat warning as some areas of the UK are expected to see temperatures of 40c.

The warning for much of the North East is in place from all day Monday and Tuesday, with hot spells likely to develop from Sunday.

Adverse health effects are part of the warning, with population-wide health effects also likely such as sunburn or heat exhaustion and other heat-related illnesses.

There is also an increased chance that some heat-sensitive systems and equipment may fail, potentially leading to localised power cuts and the loss of services to some homes and businesses.

Delays to road, rail and air travel are also possible, with potential for welfare issues.
