A MOTORIST has died following a head-on collision on a hilly section of a trunk road.
The two-vehicle incident happened at about 10.45am on Thursday on the A68 Bildershaw Bank, near West Auckland.
It is understood the driver of a black coloured Peugeot 206 was heading from Burtree in the direction of West Auckland descending the hill when he was involved in a collision with a beige Skoda Octavia heading up the hill.
Paramedics and the fire and rescue service attended, but the driver of the Peugeot was pronounced dead at the scene.
A police spokesman said the motorist who sustained fatal injuries was set to be identified.
He added: "Durham Constabulary would like to speak to anyone who may have witnessed the collision or the vehicles being driven prior to the crash."
