NEWCASTLE Falcons have kicked off their summer recruitment drive by signing two players from opposite ends of the rugby spectrum.

Scotland international Ally Hogg will form the bedrock of Alan Tait’s new back row after moving from Edinburgh, while full-back Luke Fielden will attempt to force his way into the coach’s firstteam plans after stepping up from Championship side Bedford.

Hogg’s arrival represents a major coup less than a week after Tait was confirmed as Steve Bates’ successor in the Kingston Park hot-seat.

The 27-year-old has established himself as one of the leading back rowers in the northern hemisphere, winning 48 international caps for Scotland and scoring ten tries in the process.

He has scored 16 tries in 92 Magners League appearances for Edinburgh, claimed a further five tries in 35 outings in the Heineken Cup, and moves to Kingston Park on a twoyear deal.

“Ally is a vastly experienced top international player who ticks all the boxes for us,” said Tait.

“He is a natural leader, a fantastic footballer and a real dynamic presence with the ability to play at either number eight or on the flank.

“He knows his way to the try line, has excellent skills and at 27 is just the right sort of age to become a real key figure in this team as we look to drive the club forward going into the new season.

“He has competed on the top international stage for a number of years now, I know his game and his character inside out from our time together with Scotland and I firmly believe he will be a pivotal signing for us.”

Fielden is much less experienced, but Tait is equally confident his other summer signing will make a considerable impact next season.

The 25-year-old, who has signed a one-year deal, was part of the Falcons Academy during his time as a student in the North-East, and scored 14 tries in 25 starts to help Bedford make the Championship play-offs this season.

“Luke has consistently been one of Bedford’s standout performers in a strong Championship side, and he brings us considerable flair and finishing power as we continue to build our squad for the new season,” said Tait.

“He is a class footballer whose style of play should excite the fans, and with a full pre-season under his belt we look forward to him fighting hard for a place in the side.”
