Jimmy Knowles struck a superb solo effort and missed a penalty as Altrincham won 1-0 at National League strugglers Gateshead to move up to third in the table.
Altrincham forward Knowles carried the ball deep into Gateshead’s half midway through the first period before cutting inside to fire home a superb finish.
The Robins, who created several other clear-cut chances, were awarded a penalty in the 80th minute when Lucas Weaver went tumbling in the box, but Knowles’ spot-kick was saved by Peter Jameson, who also kept out Weaver’s follow-up.
Altrincham have won seven of their last eight league games, while Gateshead are six points from safety at the foot of the table after a fifth straight league defeat.
