Thursday, August 20, Lady Captain’s Day

THIS year’s lady captain, Jean Ogden, must have thought all her birthdays had arrived together for her lady captain’s day. The weather was beautiful, hardly a cloud in the sky.

A very good turn out of female members assembled outside the club house, in Covid-compliant fashion, to be greeted by Jean, who began the proceedings by explaining that she was pleased to have a halfway house this year which would be under the marquee, just off the putting green, with a multi tee start, qualifying stableford, being the format for the day.

The halfway house, provided by Jean, was very much appreciated by all. A mixture of savouries and cakes with “fizz” or soft drinks to quench any thirsts.

Before announcing the prizes, Jean explained she had been a little pessimistic a few weeks previously that her day may not have been possible but that was all in the past as she thanked everybody for supporting her, including Pam for the meal and the green keepers for the presentation of the course, and said she had really enjoyed her day.

There were four main prizes in 18 hole, and two prizes for the nine hole competitions.

Eighteen hole results: As is often the case, there are winners and losers in many situations and Penny Nicklas was no exception. Her gain was winning the competition outright but her loss was a reduction of her handicap.

First Penny Nicklas. Second Barbara Jameson. Third Mandy Boak. Fourth Pam Brown.

Nine hole results: First Sarah Newby. Second Janet Bates.

There was best front nine for higher handicaps won by Sheila Gray. Best back nine for lower handicaps won by Jackie Thirsk.

Barbara Jameson won the Majorie Wynn Memorial Bowl.
