SUNDERLAND (4-2-3-1):
5 Camp: Made an early save but didn’t get anywhere near to the two that did find a way in;
4 Jones: Put the effort in down the right but wasn’t good enough to keep the Bees at bay
4 Browning: Didn’t look confident and was often left trying to make up for his own errors
4 O’Shea: Could quite easily have been him given the hook at half-time rather than Browning
4 Clarke-Salter: Big test of character for the young man who was given a tough time at left-back;
4 Cattermole: After inspiring a spirited fightback at Ashton Gate he couldn’t get a grip of things this time
4 Robson: Had a difficult first half when his lack of experience caught up with him in difficult circumstances
7 ASORO: Tried his hardest to pull Sunderland back into it but was let down by those around him
5 Honeyman: Was busy in the first half but his standards dropped significantly after hitting the bar near half-time
4 McGeady: Twisted and turned in the wrong areas and never looked like testing the keeper;
4 Fletcher: Didn’t have anywhere near the sort of contribution Maupay did at the other end and was booked.
Subs
Matthews (for Browning 46): Couldn’t have the impact at the back his manager wanted. 5
Williams (for Robson 46): Looked keen to make an impression after not playing for months. 5
Maja (for Fletcher 73)
(not used): Steele (gk), McManaman, Gooch, Kone.
BRENTFORD (4-3-2-1): Bentley 7; Clarke 6, Bjelland 7, Egan 7, Dalsgaard 7; McEachran 6 (Woods 57, 5), Mokotjo 8 (Judge 75), Sawyers 7; JOZEFZOON 8, Watkins 8; Maupay 7 (Marcondes 83). Subs (not used): Daniels, Macleod, Barbet, Mepham.
MAN OF THE MATCH: Florian Jozefzoon – caused problems for the weak Sunderland defence from start to finish by displaying the sort of confidence Chris Coleman would love.
