Newcastle Benfield gave new manager Alu Bangura a winning start with a 3-0 victory at South Shields in the FA Cup last night.

Benfield took the lead after 12 minutes with a header by Chris Feasey, then Andy Hirst made it 2-0 on the half hour. Brian Dodsworth scored the third from 20 yards in the last minute. Benfield are now away to Bedlington on Saturday.

Sunderland RCA are now nine points clear at the top of the first division following a 3-2 home win over Bishop Auckland.

Bishops took the lead after 19 minutes with a deflected free kick from Andy Johnson, but Ian Maddison levelled straight from the kick with a header for RCA. Maddison was on target again just before half time, but Bishops equalised on 57 minutes when a corner bounced off the post and then off RCA’s Mark Ellison into the net. But the RCA responded when Bryan Stewart raced clear and fired home.

Sunderland RCA manager Neil Hixon said: "I thought we adapted well under difficult conditions. The goals seem to be going in from all areas of the park at the moment."

Bishop Auckland manager Colin Myers said: "It was a poor performance defensively. We worked very hard, but conceded three sloppy goals, especially the winning goal."

West Auckland beat Consett 2-0 at Darlington Road. Consett missed some good chances before West took the lead on 41 minutes with a 30 yard left foot shot by Neil Pattinson that was deflected past Consett keeper Barry Poskett. West scored a second on 65 minutes when Poskett passed the ball straight to Danny Hindmarch, who lobbed the ball back over him into the net. Consett have now failed to score in each of their last three matches. They also gave a debut to new signing, Jamie Poole from Spennymoor. Poole was with them last season.

West jumped ten places into third with the win, and manager Peter Dixon said: "We're delighted with third, because we've beaten some big teams to get there." Consett manager Kenny Lindoe said: "We were poor first half and not much better second. It was a howler by our keeper for the second goal and killed us,but West worked harder all night particularly in midfield and up top and deserved to win.Our front two come with big reputations but not living up to them in the last few games."

Tow Law lost 2-1 at home to Ashington, who took a two goal half time lead through Gareth Bainbridge from six yards out after 25 minutes, then Stephen Young quickly fired another. Luke Thompson pulled a goal back after a mistake by Ashington keeper Karl Dryden in the second half.

Marske lost to Penrith for the second time in three days by a three goal margin, this time going down 5-2. Manager Paul Burton said: "I thought the effort and work rate was much better than the previous two games but unfortunately we had 7 players unavailable and we can't get our strongest eleven on the pitch. We are being punished for every mistake we make but if we keep working hard and can get some of our more experienced players back and look to bring in a few new faces which I am working on I am sure things will turn around. "

In the second division, Crook Town had an excellent 5-1 away win at Alnwick. Former Darlington midfielder Richard Hodgson scored a hat trick, with Robbie Bird and Kevin Devine scoring the others. Crook joint manager Paul Adamson said: "It was an excellent win, fully deserved, and could have been a few more."

Esh Winning won for the second time in four days, beating Chester-le-Street 3-0, all of the goals coming in the first half. Craig Mickle put them into the lead with a good finish, then Craig Coates added two more. Esh manager Andrew Soppitt said "We started really well and looked threatening each time we went forward first half. In the second half Chester came into the game a bit more and passed it well without troubling the back four. The clean sheet was the most pleasing part of the night's work."

Thornaby won 2-1 at Horden, and are now third. Anthony Abel put them into the lead against the wind, but Horden equalised at the other end through Andrew Shingleton. However, Graeme Baverstock scored a good individual goal t give them the points. Manager Ray Morton said; "We battled hard in windy conditions. They're three good away points for us."

Horden manager Brian Honour said: "I thought we played well, and we were a little unlucky not to get something out of the game." However, Horden have slipped to the bottom of the table, because Whitehaven and Seaham finished in a goalless draw.

Birtley and Gillford Park shared the points in a 2-2 draw, and birtley manager Scott Oliver said: "They were probably the best team we've played this season." Julian allsopp and Owen Peterson scored for Birtley, with Craig Wilson scoring twice for Gillford.

Seaham picked up a good point in a goalless draw at Whitehaven, their third 0-0 of the season.

Seaham assistant manager Steve Cook said: "We might have grabbed a win with some nicew football, but a draw on a windy night was probably fair. It was a great team performance, and with a bit more composure in front of goal we could have come away with all three points."
