A late goal by Justin Keegan booked Shildon’s place in the last eight of the Brookes Mileson Northern League Cup when they beat Marske 2-1 at Dean Street.

It was surprising that there were three goals in a windspoilt game. Shildon took the lead through Glenn Robson from a right wing corner, and Second Division Marske levelled with a Danny Brunskill penalty on 72 minutes.

However, Lee Chapman crossed from the left for Keegan to scramble the ball home in the dying minutes.

West Auckland lost 2-0 at Bedlington. Steven Baptist put Bedlington ahead in a scramble on the half hour, and Richard Hodgson headed the second after 75 minutes.

Northallerton nearly caused a shock at Newcastle Benfield, as they led 1-0 at one stage through Gary Mitchell following a mistake by Andy Grainger. But Benfield levelled with a header by Kevin Leighton from a Stuart Wright cross, and Adam Scope headed Benfield into the lead. Wright smacked in the third in the dying seconds.

Consett needed extra time to beat West Allotment. Gavin Barton headed them in front on 12 minutes, with Marc Walton levelling from 25 yards. Barton put Consett 2-1 up from Anthony Lund’s pass 20 seconds after half time, but Lee Hamilton scored at the third attempt for the equaliser. Ryan Bell set up Jonjo Dickman to score the winner in extra time.

Stokesley won 4-3 on penalties against Billingham Synthonia after the two sides drew 1-1 after extra time. Andy Burton put Synners ahead, but Stokesley levelled with an own goal by Chris Abel.

In the league, Norton needed a last minute penalty to earn a point at home to Penrith. The Cumbrians took the lead after 5 minutes when Mike Colman pounced on a mistake by Jim Provett and sidefooted into an empty net, and they held on until the last minute when Craig Gott converted a penalty for a foul.
