Second Division Washington have submitted a provisional resignation to the Northern League – but hope to withdraw it by the end of the season.
The club moved from their Albany Park premises to the Nissan sports complex – where Sunderland Nissan played before the company withdrew its financial backing -- with the league’s permission earlier in the season, but the finer details of their move have yet to be finalised.
Secretary Barry Spendley said: “We’re waiting for written confirmation from Nissan that we can play there, and we didn’t have it by the league’s deadline date of December 31 for resignations.
“So in order to cover ourselves and avoid having to pay a £1000 fine if we don’t receive confirmation, then we’ve submitted our resignation.
“As soon as we receive the letter from Nissan, then we’ll withdraw it. The league understands our position.”
