Spennymoor manager Jason Ainsley praised his team’s togetherness for getting them through to the second round of the FA Vase – and he’s now crossing his fingers that they don’t draw another Northern League team in the next round.

Moors had a tough away game at Bedlington, and came away with a hard fought 1-0 win, which Ainsley described as a “nightmare” tie.

“The togetherness of our players was fantastic,” he said. “That was a big win for us considering that we went out of the FA Cup early, and we want to do well in the Vase. I could see the hunger and determination of our players.

“It was a nightmare tie for us, because Bedlington are a really good team, and I don’t think anybody else would have fancied going there. I just hope we avoid the other Northern League clubs now in the draw.”

Bedlington’s Richard Hodgson missed a great chance from just a couple of yards in the opening minutes, but Gavin Cogdon scored with a rasping 35 yarder for the only goal of the game after 18 minutes, Steve Capper hit the post and also missed a penalty after 75 minutes, while full back Kallum Griffiths was dismissed for violent conduct with ten minutes left. Bedlington nearly equalised in the dying minutes, but Anthony Shandran missed an open goal.

Moors might not want to play West Auckland, who crushed Birtley 6-0, with Mattie Moffat scoring four.

He set up the first goal for Stephen Brown in the opening minutes, and then he scored the second from a John Parker assist. He lobbed the keeper for third, and completed a first half hat trick with a tap in. His personal fourth was a header, and late in the game Garry Barnes added another.

Dunston held on against a late rally and beat Second Division Washington 2-1.

Andy Bulford hit the post for Dunston early on, but he wasn’t to be denied, and he put his side into the lead with a delicate lob over the keeper from 20 yards, and then made it 2-0 with a shot on the turn.

But Washington hit back with plenty of spirit, and Glen Reay missed a penalty before Tim Bowman pulled a goal back with eight minutes left.

Northallerton came back from three goals down to draw level against Stokesley, but then lost 4-3.

Stokesley took the lead with a tap in by Bryan Stewart following a defensive mistake, then Grant Hickman put through his own goal. Jamie Hopcutt got the third from close range to put his side 3-0 up after 20 minutes but then Northallerton rolled up their sleeves to get back into the game.

They pulled one back from the penalty spot through Jason Newall, and just on half time Darren Mowbray scored another. Peter Bulmer put Northallerton on level terms, but Stokesley regained their composure and Lev Yalcin scored the winner from a rebound..

Ashington just squeezed through in extra time against Billingham Town by 4-3.

Town took an early lead through Steve Roberts, but Ashington levelled through Stephen Young’s shot from the edge of the box. Town went 2-1 in the lead through Michael Arthur’s strike, but this time Gareth Bainbridge equalised. Roberts scored from the spot to put Town back into the lead for the third time, but Young levelled near the end of normal time, his sixth goal in the Vase this season. Lee Scott headed the winner in extra time.

Tow Law were below their best at Tadcaster Albion from the Northern Counties East League and lost 2-0. Tadcaster scored twice in the first half through a Tom Woollard penalty and Carl Stewart, but Lawyers improved after half time and nearly pulled a goal back, but Matty Scott’s penalty was saved. Lawyers’ Carl Pottinger was sent off late in the game.

South Shields lost to another Northern Counties East League club, Thackley, at Filtrona Park. Shields had two efforts cleared off the line before Thackley scored twice in the second half.

The last remaining Wearside League club, Easington, were beaten 4-0 at Leeds Carnegie.

The draw for the next round will be made on Monday morning, with Whitley Bay, Shildon, Norton and Marske all coming into the competition at this stage.
