Sunderland reserves 1 Newcastle United reserves 2
GOALS by Nile Ranger and Jonathan Godsmark gave Newcastle the honours in a fiery reserves derby in Hetton.
Sunderland dominated but failed to convert a number of chances as they lost for only the second time this season.
The Black Cats finished with ten men after skipper Jack Colback was shown a second yellow card, the game that also produced eight yellow cards.
Newcastle defender Tamas Kadar was stretchered off in the 90th minute with what looked like a serious leg injury after a challenge with Jordan Cook.
The away side went in front in the 20th minute through highly-rated striker Ranger.
Mark Doninger’s corner got caught in the swirling wind and Ranger got up to power a header past Nick Colgan.
The home side had to wait until four minutes before the break to equalise.
David Dowson got it, shooting through a crowd of players from 22 yards.
Newcastle started the second half well and re-took the lead in the 54th minute when Godsmark ran onto James Taylor’s through ball and placed a shot past Colgan.
Sunderland’s Chandler, Colback and Jordan Henderson all wasted chances to score before Colback was shown a second yellow card in the 77th minute.
