SUNDERLAND have paid tribute to their popular media and communications officer, Louise Wanless, who has died at the age of 52.

Louise started her career in football as a press officer at Middlesbrough, and joined Sunderland in 2003. She spent more than 16 years overseeing the club’s media and communications department before illness forced her to take a step back last season.

A massively well-respected figure within North-East football, Louise was a passionate supporter and advocate of Sunderland, who worked tirelessly to promote the club.

She cultivated strong relationships and friendships with members of the North-East press pack, including sports writers at The Northern Echo past and present, and her contribution to North-East football was acknowledged two years ago when she was presented with the prestigious John Fotheringham Award at the North-East Football Writers’ Association’s annual awards dinner.

Former Sunderland captain, Kevin Ball, said: “We are devastated to learn of Louise’s passing. She was an extremely special person, and a valued friend, who dedicated her life to football and to Sunderland AFC.

“Louise had a real knack with people, always coming up with the right answer at the right time and knowing what to say and when. From players and staff to members of the press, and all those that were fortunate enough to meet or work with Louise, she was not just an esteemed colleague, but a true friend. She will be deeply missed by all at the Stadium of Light and many more within the game.”

Colin Young, the chairman of the North-East Football Writers’ Association, added: “As football writers in the North-East, we got to know Louise in a professional capacity during her time with both Middlesbrough and Sunderland, but very quickly, we also got to know her as a friend.

“I know she was deeply touched when she was presented with the John Fotheringham Award in 2019, and she was one of the most popular winners we’ve ever had at our awards ceremonies.”
