Sunderland 2 Hull City 0 The Black Cats promotion charge was back on track on Saturday with a hard-fought win over Phil Brown's side with goals from Jonny Evans - his first for Sunderland - and a late gift for substitute Stern John.
The win took Roy Keane's side into one of the automatic promotion spots for the first time this season and extended their unbeaten run to 13 games.
Evans grabbed the opener with a ten-yard header after less than 100 seconds from Dean Whitehead's free-kick, but Sunderland just couldn't put away a Tigers side fighting for their Championship lives.
Evans was denied by Boaz Myhill in the opening 45 minutes, but a turgid second half finished with a howler from the Hull goalkeeper.
Myhill sliced his injury time clearance straight to John, who rounded the keeper and coolly finished to put Sunderland ahead of third-placed Birmingham on goal difference.
