NEWCASTLE ended all square at West Ham United as their Premier League status continues to hang in the balance.
Wigan's victory against West Bromwich Albion has cut the gap between the Magpies and Athletic to three points, while Sunderland drop to fourth bottom before their game against Stoke City on Monday evening.
Newcastle found themselves under the cosh for long spells at Upton Park and were only saved by a string of Rob Elliot stops in the second half to ensure Alan Pardew came away from his first visit to West Ham United as Newcastle manager with a point.
