Durham’s bowlers exploited typical early season conditions to blow away Derbyshire’s top order on the opening day of the Division Two match at Derby.

After Derbyshire surprisingly elected to bat after winning the toss, Chris Rushworth struck twice in the first over before Ben Raine also claimed two wickets as Derbyshire slumped to 36 for 4.

Alex Hughes and Harvey Hosein played resolutely for 12 overs but shortly before lunch, Hughes drove loosely to cover point and at the interval, Derbyshire were 68 for 5.

Rushworth took the first wicket of the county championship season when Luis Reece edged the first ball to second slip and the third knocked out Wayne Madsen’s off-stump.

Tom Lace was dropped twice before he edged to second slip and Raine had Billy Godleman snared at first before James Weighell removed Hughes in the penultimate over of the morning.
