Yorkshire v Derbyshire (Twenty20 Cup)

YORKSHIRE Phoenix survived a batting scare to charge their way into the quarter-finals of the Twenty20 Cup with a four-wicket victory over Derbyshire Phantoms in front of an 8,500 crowd at Headingley Carnegie.

It was their fourth consecutive victory in the competition after gaining only one point from their first four matches and it was enough to progress.

Man-of-the-match Anthony McGrath and Tim Bresnan saved Yorkshire with an unbroken seventh- wicket stand of 54 after the Tykes had slumped from 43 without loss to 68 for six as they chased a modest 120 target.

The innings was given a rousing start by Andrew Gale and Craig White, who both seemed intent on getting the game over in double-quick time, Gale's first three scoring shots all being boundaries in Tom Lungley's first over and White getting moving with consecutive fours off Kevin Dean.

In Dean's next over the pair hit a six apiece but Gale then drove high and straight and was caught by Graham Wagg on the boundary for 22 off just 12 balls with four fours and a six.

White quickly followed, caught at point by former Yorkshire batsman Chris Taylor for 21 from 15 deliveries with three fours and a six, and suddenly the innings began to unravel as Wagg struck twice in three balls by getting both Gerard Brophy and Jacques Rudolph to slash catches to Taylor.

Chris Gilbert fell to a leg-side stumping by Tom Poynton off Ant Botha and Richard Pyrah ran himself out going for an improbable second run in the 11th over.

Fortunately for Yorkshire, Mc- Grath and Bresnan calmly worked the ball around the field before becoming more adventurous, Bresnan sweeping Jake Needham for six and McGrath rounding things off by lashing Jake Needham for six and four off consecutive balls in the penultimate over.

Derbyshire decided to bat on winning the toss but Yorkshire soon got on top through some fine bowling from Jason Gillespie who knocked back the stumps of Michael Dighton and Travis Birt.

The dependable David Wainwright caused Greg Smith to sweep a catch to Gillespie and Darren Gough entered the attack to bowl Simon Katich with his first delivery and then have Ant Botha spooning a second catch to Gillespie.

Richard Pyrah also went on to claim two wickets and Derbyshire found batting a constant struggle before closing on 119 for seven.
