Lancashire v Yorkshire (County Championship) : Day one, no play

The first day of the 244th Roses Championship match fell foul of the weather at Old Trafford yesterday when a soaking square and afternoon rain combined to prevent any play.

Both sides were eager to enhance their chances of winning the title, but conditions were never fit and the whole game may be ruined.

After a three-week break for the Twenty20 Cup Yorkshire are anxious to pick up every possible Championship point to safeguard their slender lead at the top of Division One.

Yorkshire went into the Roses match at full strength with the return of Michael Vaughan and Matthew Hoggard but they will be drained of their top players later this week for the Championship encounter with Warwickshire which starts at Edgbaston on Friday.

Neither Vaughan nor Hoggard have been made available for that game by England and Adil Rashid and Tim Bresnan have been selected by England Lions (formerly England A) for the three-day match against India which also begins on Friday.

Rashid played in three games for England A in Bangladesh in the winter but this will be his first home appearance for the side and it reflects how closely his progress is being monitored at the highest level.

His immediate concern, however, is to re-discover his wicket-taking form with Yorkshire because after claiming 21 dismissals in the first four Championship matches he failed to take a wicket in the next four.

England Lions (v India): Andrew Strauss (Middlesex, captain), Tim Ambrose (Warwickshire, wicketkeeper), Ravi Bopara (Essex), Tim Bresnan (Yorkshire), Stuart Broad (Leicestershire), Joe Denly (Kent), Graham Onions (Durham), Adil Rashid (Yorkshire), Owais Shah (Middlesex), Chris Tremlett (Hampshire), Jonathan Trott (Warwickshire).

Darren Maddy scored his second century of the season to get Warwickshire off to the perfect start in a rain interrupted first day of their LV County Championship clash at Hampshire.

Captain Maddy posted a classy 121 not out as Hampshire's bowlers once again struggled to make their mark at the Rose Bowl. The former England international notched 16 fours as he reached his ton from just 263 balls.

Maddy formed a decisive second wicket partnership of 119 with Jonathan Trott (50).
