DURHAM gambled on batting first in the LV County Championship match against Somerset at Chester-le-Street and were indebted to Keaton Jennings' unbeaten 48 for holding things together.

After seeing his side record all four wins this season when batting second, Paul Collingwood might have regretted his decision when he fell lbw to Craig Overton for a duck to make it 46 for three.

But Michael Richardson joined Jennings in an alliance of South Africans to take Durham to 107 for three at lunch on another blustery day.

Somerset left out Jamie Overton, whose twin proved the pick of the bowlers after coming on for the ninth over.

He struck with his fourth ball, swinging it into left-hander Mark Stoneman to have him lbw for 16.

Tim Groenewald posed little threat until he squared up Scott Borthwick, who edged low to Peter Trego at gully before Overton pinned Collingwood on the back foot with one which nipped back.

Jennings' most productive stroke was the cut and he was a little fortunate on 43 when an uppish one off Groenewald flew between gully and backward point.

He was even luckier two balls before lunch, when he would have been run out had a shy from gully hit the stumps. Richardson was on 23 at the break.
