A remarkable late onslaught from Jos Buttler helped Lancashire to a final-ball victory over Yorkshire in front of a sell-out crowd at Headingley.

Joe Root hit nine fours on his way to 55 from 39 balls in his first county appearance of the season before Glenn Maxwell took three wickets to put the hosts in control.

But Buttler struck an unbeaten 71 from 35 balls as he scampered a single off the final delivery to help his side travel back to Manchester with the Roses bragging rights.

Yorkshire opted to leave England Test opener Adam Lyth out of the side following his return from international duty, and instead opted to promote Maxwell to the top of the order.

The move looked to have paid off, as the Australia all-rounder hit Steven Croft’s first over for 18 – including a reverse-sweep for six from the opening delivery of the match – only for George Edwards to remove him in the very next over thanks to a steepling catch at mid-off by Alex Davies.

Skipper Andrew Gale was then bowled by George Edwards before Jonny Bairstow picked out Karl Brown at deep mid-wicket off the bowling of Arron Lilley to leave the Vikings on 65-3 in the eighth over.

It was left to England duo Root and Gary Ballance to get the hosts back on track as the pair added 63 from just 37 deliveries for the fourth wicket.

Balance eventually fell for 31 having hit three successive sixes before Root went through to his fifty from 35 deliveries.

But once he became the second of Faulkner’s three wickets in the 17th over, Yorkshire faltered slightly, adding just 30 in the final four overs to finish on 185-8 despite a quickfire 22 from Jack Leaning.

Lancashire’s reply began brightly, with Liam Livingstone launching Tim Bresnan for a hooked six that was inches away from clearing the Headingley stands.

But having been dropped by Matthew Fisher, the youngster fell in the fifth over for 27 as Adil Rashid took a simple catch at short third man off the bowling of Maxwell.

Ashwell Prince and Karl Brown were able to add 42 for the second wicket as the Red Rose looked to manoeuvre themselves into position to push for victory, though they stalled after the latter picked out Ballance at long-on to give Maxwell his second wicket.

Prince followed in the off-spinner’s next over as he was adjudged LBW attempting a sweep, but Buttler was able to rein vigour the visitors’ chase with some lusty hitting.

He shared in a stand of 52 for the fourth wicket with Croft before the Lancashire captain holed out to long-on, and when Faulkner fell in the same fashion in the penultimate over, Yorkshire seemed to have the game sewn up.

Buttler had other ideas, however, hitting Fisher for consecutive sixes to bring up his half-century, before he and Lilley hit Tim Bresnan’s final over for 17 as Maxwell failed to run out the wicketkeeper off the final delivery.
