Birtley Town will not be unduly worried they conceded the leadership on Saturday.

They were involved in the Monkwearmouth Charity Cup and hit third-from-bottom Willington with a five-goal blitz. The visitors survived until the 34th minute when Ben Johnson broke the deadlock but it was just about all over as Andrew Soulsby converted a penalty and Neil Blue added a third goal on 46 minutes.

Tony Coe then bagged a brace as Birtley coasted to a 5-0 victory. Boldon CA won a six-goal thriller against Annfield Plain in the Sunderland Shipowners' Cup.

Michael Meek was an early scorer but David Watson soon put the Plain back into the game.

A fine move involving four players ended with Scott Baxter restoring the advantage to the home side only for John Moore to level in the penalty spot just before the interval.

Boldon had the better of the second half. Regular marksman Meek and Paul Burrell put the game beyond the visitors.

There were no goals following extra time in the tie between Coxhoe Athletic and Jarrow and it was the South Tynesiders who went through winning 4-3 on penalties.

Goals were also scarce at Wolviston and there were only two minutes remaining as Jimmy Greening hit the winner.

Cleator Moor Celtic had survived a couple of scares when the home team had efforts disallowed but Wolviston were not to be denied and Jimmy Greening blasted the ball into the net following a free kick from Martin Lower.

Teesside Athletic were also on cup duty and they progressed in the North Riding Senior Cup. They needed extra time, however, before defeating Bedale 5-1.

Mark Raw gave the Teesside League Second Division side a 20th-minute lead but within eight minutes James Kesterton restored parity. Kesterton scored his second goal three minutes into additional time and completed his hat-trick in the 107th minute.

Gary Young and Danny Medcalf also struck and although defeated, Bedale did not deserve to lose by such a big margin. Whitehaven are the new leaders after they defeated fourth-top Cleadon SC with an only goal from Craig Robson at Jack Clark Park.

Only one other game went ahead in the league and Hartlepool and Ryhope CW finished goal-less. Poor finishing by both teams cost them dearly.

The fixture between Harton and Westoe and Guisborough Black Swan was postponed because the ground was water-logged.
