Newcastle Benfield went out of the FA Cup with a 1-0 home defeat by York City in the fourth qualifying round on Saturday, writes Ray Simpson.
Benfield lost to an eighth minute Clayton Donaldson penalty, but came more into the game in the second half and hit the post twice.
Benfield manager Paul Baker said: "After the game, York manager Billy McEwan came into our dressing room and said that we were unlucky not to be going back to their place on Tuesday.
"Maybe we showed them too much respect - we could have been four down by half time. There were one or two under-achievers in the team.
"But in the second half, our keeper never had a save to make, and we could easily have got a draw."
Whitley Bay manager Ian Chandler admitted that his side never got going as they lost 2-0 at Gainsborough.
Whitley were beaten by two second half goals, but Chandler said: "We didn't perform, and we beat ourselves. The front three know that they didn't click, but having said that, Gainsborough had done their homework and stopped Lee Kerr from playing.
"The lads are realistic, they know they didn't play."
Whitley keeper Terry Burke made two good saves before Gainsborough went in front on 64 minutes through Eric Graves, and Jamie Smith got the second in stoppage time.
