NEWCASTLE UNITED are being told to move quickly if they want to land any of Twente's three most promising talents this summer.

Steve McClaren, the manager of the Eredivisie outfit, is keen to make adjustments to his squad but has been told to raise €10m before he can bring in new faces.

And the former Middlesbrough manager is well aware of the strong interest in a number of his players from the Premier League and around Europe.

Newcastle have shown an interest in striker Luuk de Jong, Brazilian defender Douglas and Venezuelan Roberto Rosales, but are yet to make formal offers for any of them.

That does not suit McClaren, who is keen to move forward in his own summer strengthening sooner rather than later and that means finalising the futures of his three most sought after talents.

Newcastle are in no rush to move in the transfer market, having regularly expressed a desire to be patient rather than over-spend on their targets.

It is a tactic which has worked in the past, having bided their time in the transfers of Cheik Tiote and Papiss Cisse - deals which eventually saved the club money because of drops in the players' valuations.

The Magpies - who have already secured a deal for free agent Romain Amalfitano from Reims - are not expected to make a further addition until after Euro 2012.

But Twente think such a tactic could backfire on the Magpies this time around, given the contact they have had with potential suitors of their players.

De Jong would be a strong candidate to come in and replace striker Demba Ba, who has appealed to a number of clubs because of the release clause he is understood to have in his contract.

The Holland striker, who is at the European Championships with his country, is one of the hottest prospects in the Eredivisie after scoring 25 goals in 33 league appearances and would not come cheap. The 21-year-old is regarded at around £10m, with Tottenham and Benfica among those considering a bid.

Douglas, a centre-back, and Rosales, a right-back, on the other hand, would arrive at a lot cheaper price. Both have been recommended by chief scout Graham Carr and are interested in moving on from Twente ahead of next season.

Newcastle manager Alan Pardew has instructed the boardroom to work on transfer targets but both managing director Derek Llambias and owner Mike Ashley have been on holiday recently.

Pardew is also under the impression that he needs to sort out the futures of the likes of Danny Simpson and Ba before he can press ahead with his own recruitment plans.

He is keen to know what squad he will be working with before the pre-season friendlies begin in mid-July, with a couple more additions high on his agenda.

Newcastle already know they are heading to the Algarve for a three-game tournament with Porto and Olympiacos, but another of their trips is in danger of collapsing.

St James' Park officials were unable to comment on claims from South Africa last night that the proposed pre-season trip to Soweto has been pulled.

Reports in South Africa claim organisers, SAIL, have had to admit defeat in their attempts to host the event because of the costs involved in staging it.

Of the four teams required it was claimed only Kaiser Chiefs and Orlando Pirates had officially signed the contracts to take part and Newcastle had been unable to reach an agreement.

* Newcastle will enter the newly-named Capital One Cup - formerly Carling Cup - at the third round stage this season. The first round draw will be made at 9.30am.
