MIDDLESBROUGH have been forced to admit defeat in their pursuit of Hull City playmaker Robert Koren.

Boro boss Tony Mowbray had been keen to be reunited with the Slovakian after a successful time together during their days at West Bromwich Albion.

It had looked as if there was a possibility of landing Koren towards the back end of last season, when talks over extending his contract at the KC Stadium had stalled.

Despite the sacking of manager Nick Barmby, Hull have shown a determination to retain the services of their key players this summer and Middlesbrough realise a deal is now unlikely.

Leicester City, managed by former Middlesbrough defender Nigel Pearson, have also been trying to tempt Hull in to offloading Koren but nothing has materialised.

Middlesbrough are now working on other potential deals in the hope Mowbray will have a significantly strengthened squad before the start of next season.

They have already confirmed the arrival of Grant Leadbitter from Ipswich on a free, while they are still actively pursuing deals for Walsall's Emmanuel Ledesma and Bristol Rovers' Mustapha Carayol, among others.

As well as improving midfield options, Mowbray is looking to add to his defence and forward line and has looked abroad as well as in the lower leagues.

He is also looking for a goalkeeper to challenge Jason Steele for the No 1 shirt. North-East-born Steve Simonsen, released by Sheffield United after narrowly missing out on promotion to the Championship, was been linked recently and he would provide decent cover for Steele.

Middlesbrough, meanwhile, have arranged a friendly with Carlisle at Brunton Park on Friday, August 3.
