Azeem Rafiq has been told the No 1 spinner's spot in Yorkshire's County Championship team is his after ousting leg-spinner Adil Rashid.

"It's his place now, it's his shirt," declared Yorkshire captain Andrew Gale ahead of today's meeting with Glamorgan at Colwyn Bay. "It's up to Rash to put some performances in the second team to push him hard to try and get his spot back."

Off-spinner Rafiq has been given his chance in the first team, maybe more down to Rashid's poor form rather than his own good form.

Perhaps that is being a tad harsh on Rafiq, 21, who took a wicket in each innings against Northamptonshire last week along with 37 with the bat in the first innings.

But Rashid has been teetering on the brink of being dropped for the last season and a bit, having only taken 37 wickets in his last 21 Championship appearances.

"I've waited a long time for my chance, and I'm just trying to enjoy myself every day," said Rafiq, a former captain of England Under-19s. "I'm delighted to be back in the team. I said to myself at the start of the season that I just want to keep improving and enjoy my cricket.

"I'm not really putting myself under pressure in terms of keeping my place in the team. Cricket's a funny game, and things change very quickly."

Rafiq's experience in Championship cricket has been limited. The Northants game was his first since last May and only tenth in all.

But he has impressed in the second team under the guidance of Paul Farbrace, and has returned some encouraging displays in Yorkshire's 40-over team, for whom he has played all four fixtures this year.

"Paul Farbrace has been massive in my development," he revealed. "Over the winter he gave me a lot of confidence. Batting up the order and being given more responsibility in the seconds has helped my cricket.

"His impact has been huge. He's given me the confidence to believe that I'm good enough to play."

While his off-spin is the Pakistan-born player's primary role in the side, his batting must not be forgotten having scored a century in only his second Championship appearance back in June of 2009: "I see myself as an all-rounder," he confirmed.

Both Rafiq and Rashid, who has played for Yorkshire's second and Academy teams since been dropped, are in today's 13-man squad.

But, if Gale and Jason Gillespie opt for one spinner, Rashid could be back in second XI T20 action against Lancashire and Nottinghamshire today and Friday.

"Azeem gave us control in the first innings and in the second innings he bowled a more attacking line against Northants," added Gale. "He could have picked up a couple more wickets to be honest had he been a bit more lucky."
