STOCKTON'S hopes of a trip to Twickenham were dashed when Ilkley scored with the last play of the game to secure a dramatic 25-20 win at Station Road in the Northern Intermediate Cup.

With the scores tied at 20-20, a final spell of Ilkley pressure resulted in a last-gasp try that knocks Stockton out of the competition and denies them a play-off game with the North-West champions.

The defeat was harsh on a Stockton side who mastered some difficult conditions to arguably enjoy the better of much of the game.

There was little to choose between the two sides early on, but Stockton claimed the lead when Jeremy Good converted a 25th-minute penalty from close range.

Ilkley hit back with a close-range try that was set up by some polished play from a line-out, but while Stockton hooker Danny Muirhead was yellow carded at a ruck, the hosts entered the interval ahead after Simon Crozier rounded off an excellent handling move to score in the left-hand corner.

Good's conversion made it 10-5, but Ilkley claimed a penalty at the start of the second half and turned the game on its head shortly after with a breakaway try.

Crozier crossed again in the left-hand corner to level the scores, but Ilkley claimed another try after Rob Green was harshly penalised for a crooked feed.

Stockton came back again, and levelled when a spell of sustained pressure enabled Crozier to claim his hat-trick try. Extra-time beckoned, but the hosts' hopes were dashed when they spilled up some loose ball in their own 22 to enable Ilkley to triumph.

In National One, Blaydon secured a notable double over promotion-chasing Flyde with a comprehensive 34-10 away win.

The Blaydon pack were in control throughout, and after the concession of an early try, forward dominance enabled prop Robbie Kalbraier to touch down for a try. Andrew Baggett, who would end with a 100 per cent kicking record, added the conversion and a penalty.

Kalbraier crossed again at the start of the second half, and Blaydon assumed complete control when an eye-catching move that started with scrum-half Lewis Crosby ended with Matt Clark shooting through a gap to score.

Baggett's boot kicked the visitors further ahead, and they claimed a bonus point when replacement back Gavin Painter ran in their fourth try from 15 yards.

Also in National One, Tynedale moved up to seventh in the table with an impressive 37-23 win at Rosslyn Park.

Westoe claimed second spot in National Two North courtesy of a 37-6 home win over Preston. Hooker Richie Thirkell and fly-half Charlie Rayner scored two tries apiece, while centre Mark Bedworth and replacement Rob Adair also crossed the whitewash in a convincing victory.

Darlington Mowden Park were without a game in National Three North, but West Hartlepool went down to a 24-20 defeat at Rossendale.

West performed creditably to earn a losing bonus point against the second-placed side in the league given that they were 21-0 down at one stage.

Scott Butcher, Adam Coates and Colin Cheslin all scored for West, who also had two tries disallowed for a foot in touch.

In North One East, leaders Billingham cemented their position with a 32-8 win over Sheffield. Durham City beat Malton and Norton 34-29, but Northern slipped to a 15-8 defeat at Old Crossleyans and Gateshead lost 25-0 at Cleckheaton.
