KING TORUS can continue to make up for lost time with victory in the Fortune Stakes at Sandown.

An emphatic six-length winner of the Vintage Stakes at Goodwood last season, his three-yearold return was delayed until the City of York Stakes on the Knavesmire last month.

Over a trip possibly on the short side now, everything he did at York suggested he retained all his ability, staying on nicely into fourth without being given a hard time.

That impression was backed up last tine out at Haydock, where his neck margin of victory in the Superior Mile was not truly indicative of his superiority in what was a fair race.

Always handy just off the pace, Richard Hughes never had to get serious, having every move covered and just giving his mount a couple of cracks of the whip.

Given a decent surface, he should be hard to beat.

Roger Varian has one or two promising two-year-olds, among them the Group One-entered Farraaj, who can take the next step up the ladder in the VVB Engineering Novice Stakes.

An eyecatching second on his racecourse bow over course and distance at this track was unsurprisingly followed up with a ready win in a Warwick maiden.

This event should offer further clues as to his potential, with the unbeaten Newnton Lodge the obvious danger.

There is every hope of a double strike for rising star Varian as Jiwen has a solid chance of bagging a hat-trick in the Erith Group Fillies’ Handicap.

Unraced at two, the daughter of Singspiel was noted making late headway when down the field here in June, and has made no mistake in two runs since.

The last of those was her first in this sort of company and she made all to dismiss a previous winner in Jewelled, seemingly well suited by the drop to a mile from 10 furlongs.

She has been raised 6lb for that but having only seen the track three times in her life, it is reasonable to assume we have not seen the best of her just yet.

Modeyra is a strong fancy to land Yarmouth’s feature race of the year, the Irish EBF At The Races John Musker Fillies’ Stakes.

Saeed bin Suroor could do with a flagship horse for the back-end of the campaign and the suspicion remains that we have yet to see the best of this Shamardal filly, despite her being a four-year-old.

Her comeback second when narrowly beaten by Theyskens’ Theory at Sandown was a fine one, particularly as she gets further than a mile and is much better suited to this 10 furlongs.

A victory over Timepiece last year shows her class and any rain would help her cause.

Chris Wall must be slightly miffed Oh So Spicy has gone up 2lb for a recent defeat but his charge can still play a leading role in the Avenue Pub Fillies’ Handicap.

A clearcut course-and-distance winner here two runs ago, she did look like winning at Warwick at one stage but was never quite getting there.

Light Blow adds a bit of glamour to Beverley’s card as she tackles the Comedy Curry Night On 24th September Handicap.

In the care of Sir Henry Cecil, the Niarchos family-owned filly, a full-sister to Oaks heroine Light Shift and half-sister to high-class Shiva, is interesting on her handicap bow after three reasonable runs in maidens.

Quite an exciting prospect is on show at Kempton in the shape of Gabrial The King in the TFM Networks Conditions Stakes.

Trained by Michael Bell for Dr Marwan Koukash, the twice-raced youngster was a very easy winner at Ffos Las and could be anything.
