JEMMA Lowe can climb the podium at the World Championships this month according to the swimmer she beat to one of the individual Team GB berths in Shanghai - five-time European and Commonwealth medalist Fran Halsall.

Butterfly specialist Lowe, who finished sixth over 100m on her Olympic debut in 2008, well and truly delivered on her potential last year winning Commonwealth bronze and world short course silver.

She followed that up by securing her World Championship place in the 200m with silver at March's British Championships, which acted as the first trial, before securing a 100m swim at the second last month.

Making her latter achievements all the more special was that Lowe beat European 100m silver medalist Halsall to the second place by one hundredth of a second in a new Welsh record of 57.43seconds.

The 21-year-old will now join Ellen Gandy in both the 100m and 200m and Halsall, who will still swim individually in the 50m and 100m freestyles in Shanghai, is expecting Lowe to perform as a result.

"Jemma has been fantastic this year and she has swam great in the 100m and 200m butterfly recently," said Nestle Get Set Go Free Campaign ambassador, Halsall - who won world silver in 2009 and one Commonwealth and two European golds last year.

"You can only expect great things when people are swimming that well and I know Jemma moved back to train in Swansea after the Commonwealth Games.

"Her coach Bud McAllister is a fantastic coach and coaches another Commonwealth medalist, Jazmin Carlin, and he also coach Janet Evans, who is one of the best ever swimmers.

"So she's got a great coach behind her and she's swimming fantastic at the moment and the fly events are so strong now with so many of us swimming so well in them.

"But despite me not qualifying that is only a good thing and it will help push us all on and bring us all more into the game for medals at the World Championships."

Lowe is from Hartlepool, but joined Swansea ITC following last year's Commonwealth Games after a spell in Florida.

While wishing Lowe the best of luck in the Far East, Halsall is already targeting revenge for her world 100m butterfly miss at next year's all-important Olympic trials.

"Jemma just beat me in the 100m fly at the second trials and it was a very good race and I'm looking forward to racing her again at Olympic trials," she added.

"I am hoping to qualify for the Olympics for 100m butterfly as well the freestyle events and we'll, see how it goes."
