WITH the post-mortem into Australia’s second Test hammering already under way Down Under, Steve Smith and Phil Jaques have staked early claims for inclusion in the side for the third Test in Perth.

The New South Wales pair have been in Sheffield Shield action against South Australia. Smith returned figures of four for 57 to help dismiss South Australia for 188 before Jaques scored 40 in the Blues reply.

Nathan Hauritz and Phil Hughes, who are expected to replace Xavier Doherty and Simon Katich respectively, did not fare so well however, spinner Hauritz taking nought for 44 with Hughes being dismissed for just four.

FORMER Australia batsman Damien Martyn, who played in the memorable 2005 series, wants to see a feud between two former Ashes rivals used for the greater good.

There have been reports that Ian Botham and Ian Chappell had to be separated in the car park at the Adelaide Oval after the fourth day of the Test. The pair’s long-running spat dates back to an incident in a Melbourne bar over 30 years ago.

And Martyn light-heartedly suggested the duo get in the ring to settle their differences and raise money for a worthy cause.

Martyn commented on his Twitter page: “Love seeing the old boys go for it – Chappell / Botham maybe we should start the chant for a charity boxing match between the two, all funds go to charity.”

MUCH had been made of the threat that an incoming storm may cause to England’s victory push on the final day, and the importance of the tourists clearing up the Australia tail in quick time was highlighted when the storm hit early in the afternoon.

Man-of-the-match Pietersen said: “Thank goodness we did so well before lunch! We wouldn’t have seen another ball after lunch.”

FORMER England captain Michael Vaughan led the wave of tributes pouring in for the tourists Adelaide display, with the 36-year-old tweeting: ‘‘Best performance from a England side for years. Never seen us hammer the Aussies. Enjoy the day everyone.’’
