HERSCHELLE Gibbs’ international career is all but over after his national contract was terminated by mutual consent, Cricket South Africa have confirmed.

The veteran batsman, who played Twenty20 cricket for Yorkshire last summer, was in the headlines last month after he made damaging allegations about the team in his autobiography, To the Point.

He also highlighted his sexual escapades while on tour with the Proteas in Australia during the late 1990s.

Another revelation that has drawn a strong reaction is his claim that former Proteas coach Mickey Arthur allowed captain Graeme Smith too much power over the team.

‘‘It has been decided this is the best way forward for both parties,’’ said CSA chief executive officer Gerald Majola.

South Africa’s cricket board has asked its legal counsel to look into all the claims made by 36-year-old Gibbs.

He also stated that the team was effectively controlled by a clique of senior players comprising the skipper, Mark Boucher, Jacques Kallis and AB de Villiers.

Arthur, now coach of Western Australia, hit back at Gibbs, describing him as ‘‘somewhat of a loner’’, who was not fully in tune with the rest of the group.

Other revelations ranged from his troubles with alcohol to an incident of smoking marijuana with some of his team-mates on a trip to the West Indies.

The CSA’s investigation team seems to have come out against the flamboyant batsman, who is best known for his hard-hitting style at the top of the order.

Among the highlights of his career was the 175 off 111 balls he made when South Africa chased down a world record 438 against Australia at the Wanderers in 2006.

Majola added: ‘‘On behalf of CSA I would like to wish Herschelle all the best for his future and to thank him for the contribution he has made to the successes of the Proteas over an extended period.

‘‘Herschelle represented our country for 14 years with distinction and I don’t think any cricket lover will ever forget the magnificent innings he played in the famous 438 game against Australia.

‘‘Because of the sensitivity of the matter as well as the confidentiality agreements signed between the parties, the matter is now closed and there will be no further comments from the parties.”
