We asked The Legends: What do you make of your team’s start to the season?

MALCOLM MACDONALD

It has been a remarkable start. I don’t think anyone expected Newcastle to get anything from Manchester United.

Having lost 3-0 they then played Aston Villa and now they have a goal difference of plus three, it’s just incredible.

To win 6-0 was just fabulous. I don’t think anyone saw it coming.

You could not have predicted that in a million years.

Now Newcastle have a little run coming up where they play Wolves away, Blackpool at home, and Stoke away.

If they set their stall out to win all of those matches then they can eradicate any fears of relegation among the supporters.

There has been this thing with Steven Taylor this week and I don’t think it will affect things one little bit. Taylor has come out and said that he is surprised to have been put on the transfer list, but I don’t blame Newcastle.

MICKY HORSWILL

I think it’s been a really poor start for Sunderland. Considering the players we’ve brought in and the money spent, I just don’t see massive improvement in the squad as a whole. The way we’ve started isn’t promising and there are some very tough games coming up and if we don’t start picking up wins, massive warning bells will be ringing at the club.

They haven’t got any goals. We got rid of Kenwyne Jones and now in our front six, apart from Darren Bent, we haven’t got anyone who will score goals.

Look at Newcastle, who have just come up, they’ve got midfielders who will get goals.

We haven’t brought a goal-scoring midfielder and it’s been a whole year since we won a game when Darren Bent hasn’t scored.

You’ve got to get goals from everywhere in the Premier League, so we’ve got to find somebody who is going to help Campbell and Bent and that’s why I’m still bewildered they haven’t replaced Jones yet.

BERNIE SLAVEN

I was hoping Boro would hit the ground running but unfortunately we are in slow motion at the moment.

We are four games in and it has been a poor start.

The Carling Cup exit was also disappointing for the players and the fans.

Obviously a lot of new players have come in and it will be a matter of getting them bedded into the squad, but every team’s got new signings and there just seems to be a distinct lack of confidence among the squad.

We were expecting greater things and loads of enthusiasm but it has not happened.

I think Strachan is still hoping to get a player or two in before the deadline and I think we are in desperate need of a right winger, so let’s hope he can get one in because, at the moment, it is just not good enough.

He needs to get a settled team and play players in their right positions if we are going to move forward and be successful.
